Controlled-Roughness Surfaces For Studies Of Adhesion And Friction

Marina Ruths, Chemistry

The proposed project will provide information on how surface structure and pressure distributions between surfaces and in confined films affect adhesion and friction at the nanoscopic level. This is of relevance for nanomanufacturing, where the strength of adhesion in different assembly steps can be crucial for successful construction of the final product. Furthermore, investigations of this kind are expected to lead to fundamental, molecular understanding of adhesion and friction processes between rough surfaces.
