Biomanufacturing has emerged as an industry of strategic importance worldwide and is one of the key technology areas identified by the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) as an appropriate target for public-private investment to support advances in manufacturing and U.S. competitiveness. The development of advanced biomanufacturing technologies will support this fast-growing industry and help establish the United States as a global leader in this area (PCAST, 2012) (AMP 2, 2014).

The goal of BSTC is to promote the development of advanced biomanufacturing science and technology, to explore the improvement and transformation of existing biomanufacturing efforts, and to share resources while promoting innovative development. Upon successful completion of this proposed planning effort, the consortium aims to:

  1. Prototype a system of innovation for advanced biomanufacturing
  2. Develop breakthroughs in a number of key technologies
  3. Establish technological standards and sustained global leadership of the U.S. biomanufacturing industry
  4. Build a robust and integrated supply chain network for advanced biomanufacturing
