The University of Massachusetts Lowell operates on a semester system. The calendar consists of a fall and spring semester during the academic year. The fall and spring semesters shall be a minimum of 15 weeks of instruction each, inclusive of periods for examinations. The winter and summer sessions are of varying lengths.
The academic calendar for each academic year shall be selected from a set of preapproved calendars adopted by the Faculty Senate and maintained as an appendix to this policy located in the Curriculog proposal. The appropriate calendar shall be selected based on the weekday on which September 1 falls and whether the academic year includes February 29.
In extraordinary circumstances, the Provost may propose temporary modifications to a published calendar consistent with the minimum semester length requirements stated above to be voted on and approved by the Faculty Senate.
