Application Requirements
All international first-year and transfer applicants to daytime, on-campus programs must apply using the UMass Lowell Application or the Common Application. The application fee is $70.
You are a first-year applicant if you have not completed any college or university coursework after secondary school.
Your application should include:
- Your official high school or secondary school records, including results from culminating or leaving examinations. Records must be sent directly to UMass Lowell from the school or Ministry of Education. All documents in foreign languages must be professionally translated and notarized.
- Scores from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) or the American College Test (ACT), or you may select our No Test option. The CEEB code number for UMass Lowell is 3911.
- An essay.
- A letter of recommendation.
- English proficiency requirements.
- First-year applicants may waive the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam or Duolingo if their secondary institution provides written verification that the means of instruction is in English, they are enrolled in an IB curriculum, attend an American School or enrolled in a curriculum that leads to Cambridge International Examinations: IGCSE/O-Level and GCE/A level exam.
You are a transfer applicant if you have completed college or university coursework after secondary school.
Your application should include:
- Official transcripts from all prior institutions sent directly to UMass Lowell. Transcripts from international institutions must be evaluated course-by-course by World Education Services (WES) before university academic departments review courses for transfer credit.
- Course descriptions are required for all undergraduate coursework. They must be translated into English and notarized to ensure authenticity of the translation and must come directly from a college catalog or the institution’s website. Course descriptions are forwarded to the appropriate academic department for evaluation. Approval of transfer credits is determined by each individual department, and there are no guarantees that transfer credits will be granted.
- English language proficiency requirements.
- Applicants for transfer admission may demonstrate English language proficiency by showing they have completed College Writing I & II or English Composition I and II in a U.S. university or college. The minimum grade requirement for each course is a C-.
All international applicants are required to submit results of the Duolingo, IELTS, TOEFL, ASC English, LanguageCert Academic or Pearson exams, except citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Guyana and English-speaking countries of Africa and the West Indies. You are responsible for making arrangements to take the test. UMass Lowell requires the following minimum exam scores:
- Duolingo: First-year applicant: 110; Transfer applicant: 110
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) : First-year applicant: 6.50. Transfer applicant: 6.50
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): All applicants: 79.00
- ASC English: All applicants: Minimum score 6 - High Advanced
- Pearson Test of English: First-year applicant: 61.00. Transfer applicant: 56.00
- LanguageCert Academic: All applicants minimum score: 70-74

UMass Lowell partners with ASC English to support international applicants who meet all admissions criteria, but do not yet have the required English language proficiency. ASC English can prepare international applicants to achieve the required English language proficiency needed to enroll in UMass Lowell’s degree programs.
