UMatter2: Mental Health & Wellness
We recognize there are many challenges in our world today: family responsibilities, financial worries, relationship challenges, and managing work, school, and social lives... We are here for you every step of the way, from managing stress and anxiety to counseling support, UMass Lowell has resources to help.
The Office of Student Life and Well-being at UMass Lowell helps students stay healthy, balanced, and successful both in and out of the classroom. Through programs and campus resources, the office supports students’ emotional, physical, and social well-being so they can thrive during their college experience.
Important Things to Know
Health Services
- Walk-in service is not available, so your student should be sure to call to make an appointment before visiting the Wellness Center (978-934-6800). There are often same day or next day appointments available.
- While there is no charge or copay for a visit to Health Services, students must provide their health insurance information when making an appointment in case they need lab work or a vaccination.
- All newly enrolled students MUST complete all required health forms (including Health History and TB Risk Assessment) and immunizations (found on the Wellness Center website) and upload them to the Health Services Patient Portal. All health records are required by August 1 for Fall enrollment and January 1 for Spring enrollment to avoid a registration hold.
- If your student needs medical care during the evening or over the weekend, there are several urgent care facilities that they may visit (be sure to remind them to bring their health insurance information). For life threatening medical emergencies, students can call 978-934-4911 (on campus) or 911 (off campus). UMass Lowell EMS is available 24/7 on campus.
Counseling Services
- Individual counseling and psychiatric care are solution-focused and time-limited in nature. Therefore, students already in treatment with a community mental health provider are advised to remain in care with their current provider (as long as your student is receiving quality care).
- To schedule an appointment, your student may call 978-934-6800 to request an initial consultation. Students themselves are required to call to schedule their appointments.
- A 24/7 On-Call Crisis Counselor is immediately available by phone. Students may speak to a UMass Lowell crisis counselor anytime, anywhere. To speak to the on-call crisis counselor, students may call 855-890-2879. In case of emergency, students may call 978-934-4911 to speak to UMass Lowell Police.
- Referral to our Student Assessment, Referral and Support (STARS) team can be made by anyone (including family members) with non-urgent concerns about the welfare of a UMass Lowell student. The concerns are reviewed by STARS team staff, and a case manager will reach out to your student to offer information, resources and assistance. To submit a referral, visit the STARS website.
- Togetherall provides an online, anonymous peer support community for college students around country. Free for UMass Lowell students, the platform is monitored by clinicians to ensure the safety of all who participate. To register and engage in the community, students may go to the Togetherall website.
- MiResource online referral platform is free for UMass Lowell students and helps students locate customized mental health care and services off campus. To locate a provider, students may go to the MiResource website.
