A developmental and counseling psychologist, Dr. Hulbert emphasizes an ecological approach to the study of individuals and families across the lifespan, including historical, cross-cultural and generational perspectives. Her teaching has included undergraduate and graduate courses in lifespan development, applied developmental psychology, cross-cultural development and psychological assessment. She is particularly interested in how the interaction of work and family roles for both women and men affects family functioning.

Dr. Hulbert co-edited "Women's Lives Through Time: Educated American Women of the Twentieth Century" (Jossey-Bass, 1993). As a University in the City Scholar and working with UMass Lowell's Center for Family, Work and Community, she was a founding member of the Greater Lowell Family Resource Collaborative. Her recent work focuses on the development of community-based programs for intervention and prevention with children and families. She is a licensed psychologist and a member of the American Psychological Association, Divisions 20 (Adult Development) and 35 (Psychology of Women). As Professor Emerita, she continues to teach part-time. She has been teaching at UMass Lowell since 1970.
