Every Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) senior spends two semesters on a team project for a real client: a company, a government lab, a faculty research group or an disability-assistive technology.

How the Capstone Works

Seniors take EECE.3991 Capstone Proposal and EECE.4991 Capstone Project. In the first course, each team works with its sponsor to set the requirements and the design. In the second, the team builds, tests and delivers the system. Teams meet their faculty mentors every week.

Many teams also include students from other departments, such as Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Types of Projects

  • Industry sponsored: problems from companies and government labs.
  • Assistive technology: custom devices for clients with disabilities, through the Assistive Technology Program.
  • Biomedical: projects with healthcare organizations.
  • Faculty research: projects in faculty labs.
  • Student competitions: national contests such as the U.S. Department of Energy Collegiate Wind Competition.
  • Community: projects for local organizations.
  • Entrepreneurship: new product ideas, with the Manning School of Business.
