A Message from the Dean

It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the Francis College of Engineering at UMass Lowell. As an engineer, educator, and advocate for inclusive programs, I am inspired every day by the energy, creativity, and dedication of our students, faculty, staff, and partners. Our college has a strong tradition of excellence in engineering education and groundbreaking research, and I look forward to continuing that legacy while pursuing bold, student- and discovery-focused initiatives aligned with UMass Lowell’s Research 1 (R1) vision for social impact and economic development.
Throughout my career, I have believed in the power of engineering to transform lives—both through what we create and how we prepare future leaders to face society’s most urgent challenges. At the core of this transformation is a strong commitment to experiential learning, ethical practices, and inclusive mentorship. Whether in a first-year design course or a cutting-edge research laboratory, I believe the most meaningful educational moments happen when students are encouraged to think critically, communicate effectively, and build confidence through hands-on, real-world problem solving. We will continue to broaden opportunities for project-based learning, interdisciplinary research, and partnerships that equip our graduates not just to compete—but to lead with purpose.
As Dean, I am dedicated to fostering a collaborative, transparent, and supportive culture that promotes excellence in all aspects of our college. I will work closely with our faculty and staff to increase our research impact, improve professional development, and strengthen our support systems for students at every level. Together, we will deepen our commitment to equity, sustainability, and innovation in ways that reflect the diversity and resilience of our community and region. Guided by the UMass Strategic Plan, we strive to be a catalyst for discovery and a model of inclusive engineering education.
I invite you to join us—whether as a student, alumnus, industry partner, or fellow educator—as we shape the next chapter of the Francis College of Engineering. This is a place where ideas flourish, confidence takes hold, and engineers emerge. I’m proud to lead this exceptional community and look forward to all we will accomplish together.
Warm regards,
Susan C. Roberts, Ph.D.
