The AI Steering Committee serves as UMass Lowell’s central coordinating body for advancing the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence across teaching and learning, research, curriculum development, and campus operations. The committee’s charge is to shape a unified institutional vision and roadmap that supports innovation while ensuring equity, transparency, and academic integrity. 

The committee promotes and supports AI integration through three core areas: 

Teaching and Learning/Curriculum Development 

  • Support faculty in embedding AI concepts and tools across disciplines. 
  • Develop micro-credentials and resources to expand AI literacy for students, faculty, and staff. 
  • Offer workshops, best practices, and seed funding to encourage innovation. 

Research 

  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration on AI applications across colleges. 
  • Emphasize ethical and transparent research practices. 
  • Highlight and disseminate campus AI research through the website, briefs, and symposia. 

Campus Operations and Business Processes 

  • Identify AI opportunities to improve efficiency and data-informed decision-making. 
  • Recommend governance models for responsible implementation. 
  • Monitor, assess, and share the impact of AI-enabled initiatives.
