Is Massachusetts Inclusive Postsecondary Education (MAIPSE) a degree program?

No. MAIPSE at UMass Lowell is an audit-only program. Students enroll in college courses as auditors and do not earn academic credit toward a degree.

How many courses do students take?

Students typically audit one to two undergraduate courses per semester, based on their goals, readiness and transition plan.

What does it mean to audit a course?

Auditing means students attend class, participate in learning activities, and engage with course content without earning academic credit or receiving a traditional letter grade.

Will students receive grades?

No. Because MAIPSE is audit-based, students do not receive letter grades. Progress is supported through individualized person-centered plans, goal-setting and feedback.

What is a person-centered plan?

A person-centered plan is an individualized planning process that focuses on a student’s strengths, goals, and interests. In MAIPSE, this plan helps guide course selection, campus involvement, work exploration, and support services to ensure each participant’s college experience reflects their personal vision and priorities.

How are classes selected?

Course selection is determined collaboratively between the student and MAIPSE staff based on interests, career goals, strengths and availability.

How long can students participate in the program?

Students typically participate for one to two years, depending on individual goals and transition planning.

What supports are available?

Students may receive:
  • Peer mentor support
  • Academic coaching
  • Collaboration with staff
  • Support from appropriate campus offices

Are students included with other UMass Lowell students?

Yes. Inclusion is central to MAIPSE. Students attend classes and may participate in campus activities alongside the broader UMass Lowell community.

Can students join clubs and organizations?

Yes. Students have access to student organizations, events, and campus programming.

Is housing available?

No. On-campus housing is not part of the MAIPSE program at this time.
