Pre-Arrival Information

Pre-Arrival Information for newly accepted students

Welcome to UMass Lowell! The staff at the ISSO are very much looking forward to meeting and working with you upon your arrival on campus.

Take a virtual tour of UMass Lowell!

It’s a great way to get to know the campus before arriving to the U.S.

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view any pdf files. It can be download for free from the Adobe website.

There are two guides you should read immediately:

  • The first guide is our Pre-Arrival Guide (pdf) which contains crucial information regarding our FREE Airport Pick Up Service and temporary housing options.
  • The second guide is our New Arrival's Beginner Guide (pdf) which contains information pertaining to the campus, the city of Lowell, and offices to visit once you have arrived.

We ask that you read through this information as it is very helpful for incoming students making the transition from home to the United States.

Change of Status

There are certain visa categories that do not permit full time study in the U.S. Your full time student status at UMass Lowell is contingent upon proof of USCIS approved of change to F-1 student status by the first day of classes.

Students currently in the US in:

  • B-1/B-1 status may NOT register for any academic classes
  • F2 status may not register for full-time classes nor be enrolled in a degree program
  • F1 status at another school in the US, must have completed the SEVIS transfer in process by the first day of classes

In addition, students currently attending another school in the U.S. with a pending change of status application to F-1 will not be able to study or be paid if the change of status to F-1 is not approved AND UMass Lowell I-20 form is not issued by the first day of classes.

The ultimate responsibility to know and follow the US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations rests upon the students
