The Research and Evaluation in Education Ph.D. prepares graduates of the program to assume research faculty positions in higher education, to work in policy and research institutions or to lend their skills to analysis and evaluation in industry.

Graduates from our program are in high demand, working as:

  • University Faculty
  • Educational Administrators
  • Research Scientists
  • Program Evaluators
  • Educational Consultants
  • Data Analysts in Education
  • Professional Development Trainers

Research Opportunities

Faculty at the School of Education are actively engaged in research, often funded by federal and state grants as well as grants from nonprofit foundations. Research opportunities include full-time Research Assistantships and Hourly Research Assistant Positions (learn more below).

In addition to funded research opportunities, several students support faculty research projects and/or engage in independent research through Directed Studies or volunteer Research Assistant (RA) positions. While these opportunities are not compensated, students are able to gain hands-on research experience and develop their academic writing and conference presentation skills.

Faculty members frequently partner with colleagues from other disciplines, offering students exposure to a broad spectrum of research methodologies and perspectives. This interdisciplinary collaboration prepares you to tackle complex, real-world problems in innovative and integrative ways.

What Our Graduates Are Saying

“During my time at UML, I examined policy issues that shaped my experiences as a public school teacher. From conducting research to providing expert testimony and writing op-eds, the faculty in the program have provided me with numerous opportunities to grow as a scholar. I feel well-positioned for the next leg of my career in education.”
Ashley Carey ’24, Ph.D. in leadership in education, postdoctoral research associate in educational policy and leadership at UMass Amherst

“This degree was instrumental in providing me with many new opportunities that enriched my life. In addition to continuing to work in K-12, I am now a published author, a consultant for school districts across New England, managing editor of the Massachusetts Music Educators Journal and an adjunct professor. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge in this program!”
Christy Whittlesey ’19, Ph.D. in research and evaluation in education, fine and performing arts coordinator at the Chelmsford, Massachusetts public schools

Funding Opportunities

UMass Lowell strives to provide financial support for doctoral students. Funded opportunities for full-time students include Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships. What are the funded opportunities available for students in the School of Education?

Students seeking funding should indicate their interest in a Graduate Assistantship at the time of submitting their application. There are two funded Graduate Assistantship opportunities for full-time students:

Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistantships are awarded at the time of admission. Teaching Assistants (TAs) support the Bachelor's of Education program and Master's in Education programs. Given the School of Education focus on teacher training, we seek TAs with previous experience in elementary education, special education, STEM education, literacy education and/or working with culturally and linguistically diverse learners. TAs work directly with faculty, gaining hands-on experience in syllabus development, classroom instruction, assessment, supervising student teachers and/or supporting student academic success. Several TAs go on to become instructors of record in their third or fourth year of the program.

Research Assistantships

Research Assistantships are typically awarded at time of admission, though opportunities can become available for students in subsequent years of the program. Research Assistants (RAs) work directly with UMass Lowell faculty, Research Centers or Academic Units, typically supporting grant-funded research or teacher training projects or research and evaluation-focused university projects. Depending on the focus of the project, RAs gain hands-on experience in research instrument development, data collection, data analysis and other aspects of the research process.

Besides Teaching Assistantships, are there Research Assistantship (RA) opportunities available?

Additional options include Hourly School of Education Research Assistant positions (Hourly RAs) and Student Affairs Graduate Fellowships.

Hourly RA opportunities depend on whether faculty members have research grants with funding to support an hourly RA. When available, hourly RA opportunities are posted to all School of Education PhD students, and interested applicants can apply.

Student Affairs Graduate Fellowships are offered through the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. School of Education PhD Program faculty do not participate in the hiring or supervision of Student Affairs Graduate Fellowships, though several PhD students have worked in these positions.

What is the approximate yearly amount for the stipend? Are there opportunities in the Summer and Winter terms?

The stipend for the academic year, covering the fall and spring terms (9 months), is approximately $19,200. However, TA and RA stipends do not cover the Summer and Winter terms.

What if I have external funding or am interested in attending as a self-funded student?

If you have external funding, such as a scholarship or work-based tuition support, and/or plan to attend as a self-funded student, please indicate that at the time of application.

Is there any specialization offered in this program?

Is a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) / Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score required for application?

I don't have a master's degree; can I apply for the Ph.D. program?

No. We require a master's degree for applicants to be eligible to apply for our Ph.D. programs.

Is there a specific template for letters of recommendation?

No, there is no specific template required for letters of recommendation.

Should I contact professors in School of Education before I submit my application?

Students are welcome to contact program faculty members to express interest and seek more information. However, please note that contacting faculty members does not guarantee the award of Teaching Assistantship (TA) or Research Assistantship (RA). Refer to the previous questions regarding TA and RA above for more information on securing these positions.

Is there any deadline for the Ph.D. program application?

If you would like to be considered for a School of Education Teaching Assistantship or Research Assistantship, you should submit your application by January 15th.
