A proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE) spectrometer facility is used to determine the elemental composition (atomic numbers 10 through 82) of complex samples, such as minerals, paints, foodstuffs, archeological objects, and others.
A proton beam interacts with the sample, thus releasing an x-ray indicative of the sample composition when analyzes yielding an atomic composition of unknown samples.
