Dr. Johnston's research interests include process monitoring, process control, and process development for injection molding. He also works in the areas of part design and mold design utilizing computer-aided engineering and manufacturing.

Biosketch

Stephen Johnston holds a B.S. in plastics engineering technology from Penn State, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in plastics engineering from UMass Lowell. He research focuses on polymer processing and product design, emphasizing injection molding, with expertise in instrumentation, analysis, simulation, design for manufacturability, and mold design. He has industrial experience with companies including Moldflow Corp., Bausch & Lomb, and Lord Corp. His research group at UMass Lowell is industrially funded with sponsored projects coming from over 25 companies resulting in over 40 articles and proceedings, a book chapter, and three patents. He has also taught numerous industrial seminars to attendees from over 125 different companies. Prof. Johnston’s course responsibilities have included: Introduction to Engineering, Introduction to Design, Mold Design Engineering, Product Design, and Advanced Mold Design. Finally, he serves as advisor for the Student Chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineers coordinating annual trips to the SPE ANTEC conference as well as other on-campus events.
