Expertise
Nutritional Epidemiology; Nutritional Sciences; Clinical Trials; Gut Microbiome; Musculoskeletal Aging
Research Interests
Professor Mangano is a nutritional epidemiologist and translational scientist whose research examines how dietary patterns, the gut microbiome, inflammation, metabolomics, and environmental exposures influence chronic disease risk, particularly in aging and health-disparate populations. Her work integrates population-based cohort studies, biomarker and multi-omic approaches, and translational intervention research to inform precision nutrition and chronic disease prevention.

Research Currently in Progress
The role of dietary patterns, protein, dairy foods, and nutrient interactions in musculoskeletal health and healthy aging; how diet, the gut microbiome, inflammation, and metabolomic pathways influence bone and cardiometabolic outcomes; population-specific diet–disease relationships in Puerto Rican and other underserved communities; the impact of food additives and environmental exposures, including titanium dioxide and PFAS, on gut health and chronic disease risk; and culturally tailored nutrition interventions, meal-based approaches, and microbiome-targeted strategies to improve health outcomes.
Future research directions include:
Developing precision nutrition and community-engaged dietary interventions that improve gut homeostasis, reduce chronic disease risk, mitigate harmful environmental exposures, and advance health equity.
