Making WAVES is an ambitious program to increase participation and advancement of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) academic careers. One of our goals is to provide the campus community with examples of successful women in STEM at the academic level through a 50/50 Lecture Series. We bring notable scientists to campus to give a lecture in a special format. Half of the speaker’s time is allotted to his/her technical, educational and research interests, and the other half is devoted to his/her career path, detailing, for example, challenges overcome or the influence of mentors. These lectures, balanced by the speaker’s research accomplishments and personal career journey, inspire newer faculty of both genders to persevere not only through the example set by leaders in STEM, but by looking at their own career holistically.

Faculty selected as hosts for the 50/50 mentoring program are allotted a budget of up to $1000 to bring their chosen speaker to campus, and an additional $1000 for expenses related to follow-up activities. The WAVES team will work with hosts to coordinate both aspects of the mentoring activities.
