My multidisciplinary group uses engineering approaches to solve problems in life sciences and medicine. The goal of our research program is to control and modulate cellular behavior for directing repair and regeneration of tissues. To achieve this goal, we use diverse tools from chemistry, cell biology, materials science, microfabrication, and engineering.

We develop functional biomaterials using unconventional approaches to generate tissue-mimetics for clinical applications including regeneration of bone and cardiovascular tissues as well as wound healing. My lab also has expertise on developing point-of-care (POC) diagnostic platforms for detection of pathogenic diseases (both viral and bacterial), health conditions, forensic applications, and testing for environmental reagents. To overcome the limitations with the conventional methods, we develop rapid, portable, and reliable platforms for POC diagnostics. For example, earlier this year, we have developed a rapid and simple test for detection of the Covid-19 virus from bodily fluids in only 5 min.

Specific research interests of my lab include developing i) next generation functional biomaterials for regenerative engineering, ii) new tools for origami-inspired tissue engineering, and organ-on-paper models, iii) paper-based biomaterials and medical devices to detect gradients of oxygen, nutrient, and small molecules, iv) in vitro disease models for personalized medicine, and v) low-cost POC diagnostics to solve problems in global health. The ultimate goal of my research is to improve human health and quality of life.
