As a psychology major, you will develop the skills and knowledge to understand human behavior and cognition, contribute solutions to human problems and respond to a changing world.

Psychology has been calling to Emily Willard since high school, when she found herself drawn to the field’s broad applications and its focus on people’s thoughts and behavior.

“Psychology can transfer over to anything and brings many opportunities,” says the Acton native.

Willard earned an associate degree in psychology from Middlesex Community College before transferring to UMass Lowell as a junior. She knew UML, a Research 1 institution, was where she wanted to be after attending an open house.

“I love UML because it’s an R1 institution, and I really want to go into research,” she says.

Through the Emerging Scholars Program, Willard has been able to conduct research with Associate Professor Amber Horning Ruf, the master’s program coordinator in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies. Together, they have been researching human and drug trafficking in San Diego. In February, during Willard’s senior year, they will present their research at the Western Society of Criminology conference in San Diego.

Willard says the research work has been intense, but in a good way.

“I always find that you end up dedicating yourself easily to the things you value the most,” she says.

An Honors College student, Willard also took advantage of a study abroad program, American Writers in Paris, during the summer before her senior year.

“I would’ve never had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris without the Honors College,” says Willard, who enjoyed learning why American writers moved to Paris, how the city inspired them and how their works shaped art and politics.

Willard visited Paris with Julian Zabalbeascoa, associate director of honors experiential learning opportunities and communication. She now works with him on Honorable Mentions, the college’s monthly newsletter. The work gives Willard a chance to speak with a variety of people around campus.

“It's been a great learning experience and has helped me prepare for professional speaking and interviewing,” she says.

Willard is also a member of the UMass Lowell Powerlifting Club; she serves as the club’s treasurer and says she has found a strong sense of community there. During her junior year, the team participated in the USA Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals in New Orleans.

“It's really cool to see how empowering the sport is, especially to women,” Willard says.

As she considers her next steps, Willard is certain research will be involved. A master’s degree and Ph.D. are also calling her name. One thing is certain: UMass Lowell and her professors have made a huge impact.

“UMass Lowell goes far beyond the general learning experience that students expect,” she says.
