Venture Capitalist IDs What Makes the Best Startups Sing

When and where: Monday, Sept. 30, 2 p.m. Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, Perry Atrium, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell

What: Venture capitalist and leadership expert Robert Stringer will lead a free program for the campus and community that draws on his experience as the founder and managing partner of Crimson Seed Capital, where he works as an angel investor with more than 30 early-stage companies in the technology, health and wellness, and consumer goods industries. Stringer will also sign copies of his latest book “Culture.com: How the Best Startups Make It Happen.” The Jack M. Wilson Center for Entrepreneurship at UMass Lowell is presenting the event as part of its Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Shares Lessons Learned

When and where: Wednesday, Oct. 2, 5:30 to 7 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Third floor, 110 Canal St., Lowell

What: Boston Marathon bombing survivor and UMass Lowell graduate Roseann Sdoia will talk about how her life-changing experience at the April 2013 race propelled her to become an entrepreneur and motivational speaker. Sdoia, who holds a bachelor’s degree from UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business, was standing by the marathon’s finish line when one of two bombs exploded, critically injuring her. During the program, she will share her insights about what she’s learned since then and how to help others discover their strengths. Career Fair Connects Students to Opportunities

When and where: Thursday, Oct. 3, 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell

What: UMass Lowell’s Fall Career Fair will welcome more than 200 employers looking to fill full-time jobs, co-ops and internships. More than 1,000 students will speak with recruiters – many of whom are UMass Lowell graduates. Participating students and employers will be available to discuss their objectives and how a UMass Lowell education prepares candidates for the professional world. Of the thousands who graduated from UMass Lowell last year, 96 percent began full-time jobs or enrolled in graduate school within a year. UMass Lowell alumni earn the top starting and mid-career salaries for graduates of all New England public research universities, according to PayScale.com. Note: The event is not open to the public, but members of the media are invited to cover it.

How Robots, Gig Work are Changing the Job Market

When and where: Thursday, Oct. 3, 4 to 5:30 p.m. O’Leary Library Learning Commons, Mezzanine, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell

What: “The Gig Economy, Automation and You” will feature UMass Lowell’s Scott Latham – an expert in business development and strategic planning – in a panel discussion about how freelance workers are shaping the workforce, how artificial intelligence is changing the nature of jobs and what employees can do to prepare for the future. Latham is an associate professor of management in UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business. Moderating the discussion, which is free and open to campus and community, will be Associate Prof. Mignon Duffy, chairwoman of the UMass Lowell Sociology Department. Prospective River Hawks Invited to Open House

When and where: Sunday, Oct. 27, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell

What: Individuals interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree at UMass Lowell are invited to an open house where they will learn about the university’s academic programs, which are nationally accredited and ranked for quality, return on investment and more. Exhibits, presentations, a resource fair and campus tours will be offered. New programs include degrees in music composition for new media and nutrition with a concentration in dietetics.
