WHAT: UMass Lowell will dedicate its College of Health Sciences to alumnus Roy J. Zuckerberg in recognition of his many years of support for UMass Lowell and its students.

The Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, as it will be known, is made up of the Solomont School of Nursing, the Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences, Department of Physical Therapy and Department of Public Health.

More than 1,300 undergraduate and 530 graduate students are pursuing degrees through the college’s 34 degree and certificate programs. In addition to work in the classroom and lab, students participate in service-learning and other experiential education in the community and across the health-care industry.

Zuckerberg studied textile sales and management at what was then known as Lowell Technological Institute before going on to serve in the U.S. Army and then to become the longest-serving partner in Goldman Sachs’ history before his retirement in 1998. Today, he is senior partner with Samson Investment Partners whose philanthropy extends to health-care, education and cultural institutions in the U.S. and abroad.

At UMass Lowell, Zuckerberg has supported the College of Health Sciences, scholarships and initiatives including the Francis College of Engineering’s Assistive Technology Program. He has also served as the chairman of the UMass Foundation’s investment committee and established the Zuckerberg Endowed Leadership Chair/Prize, which recognizes faculty and staff across the UMass system for leadership in helping the university accomplish its goals.

Zuckerberg is scheduled to speak at the event, along with UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney, UMass President Marty Meehan, UMass Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Manning, Dean Shortie McKinney, Vice Chancellor for Advancement John Feudo and Kathryn Coughlin, an exercise physiology major from Auburn.

WHERE: Weed Hall, UMass Lowell South Campus, 3 Solomont Way, Lowell. For directions and parking information, contact UMass Lowell media relations.
