5:30 to 7 p.m.
WHAT: New and returning UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff will celebrate all things Lowell during “Welcome Back Night.” Showcasing the city’s vibrant downtown cultural district, the third annual event will feature food, music, giveaways from local businesses and the scoop on Lowell’s restaurants, attractions and historical destinations.
Speakers are scheduled to include Steven Tello, UMass Lowell’s vice chancellor for entrepreneurship and economic development, and Lowell Mayor Edward Kennedy. UMass Lowell delivers more than $921 million in positive economic impact to the region annually.
Co-hosted by the city, “Welcome Back Night” will be held at Lowell’s Mill No. 5, a row of eclectic shops, eateries and even an independent movie theater tucked inside a reclaimed textile building. The event will include an appearance by UMass Lowell’s mascot Rowdy the River Hawk and performances by The Party Band – a jazz-infused group of musicians who are UMass Lowell students, alumni and friends – along with other student-led acts. Participants in UMass Lowell’s DifferenceMaker Program, which Tello directs, will also be available to talk about the initiative, through which students gain entrepreneurial skills and even launch ventures in business and the community.
UMass Lowell holds the prestigious Carnegie Foundation classification as a “community-engaged campus” and is on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Students, faculty and staff annually record more than 200,000 hours of service in the community.
WHERE: Mill No. 5, 250 Jackson St., Lowell. Contact UMass Lowell media relations for directions and parking information.
