DiffMakers Budding Entrepreneurs to Meet at DifferenceMaker Contest Kick-Off
When: Tuesday, Jan. 24, 5:30 p.m.
What: UMass Lowell students interested in learning entrepreneurial skills will participate in the kick-off of the university’s $50K DifferenceMaker Idea Challenge. The competition asks participants to form teams and come up with an idea for a product or enterprise that addresses a need in business or the community. UMass Lowell faculty and alumni mentor the students as they prepare for pitch contests where they will present their concepts to expert judges, leading to the finals in April. The winners receive a share of $50,000 in seed money to help make their ideas a reality. Past DifferenceMaker winners include Nonspec, which fabricates low-cost, scalable prosthetics. Since being awarded the top prize of $5,000 in the 2013 competition, the student-run company has raised more than $25,000 in seed money and is headquartered at UMass Lowell’s Innovation Hub business incubator in Lowell.

MPANew Public Administration Program Brings Leaders to Campus
When: Friday, Jan. 27, 2 p.m.
What: Leaders in human services, law enforcement and corrections will come together with UMass Lowell faculty to discuss how the university’s new master’s of public administration degree program can prepare students for success in their respective fields. The MPA readies graduates for careers in government, human-services administration, criminal justice and corrections, and arts management. The program is designed for students who are starting out in the public or nonprofit sectors, along with mid-career professionals. A bachelor’s-to-master’s track is available for UMass Lowell undergraduates. NOTE: The event is not open to the public but media is invited to cover it. VSACelebration Rings in Vietnamese New Year
When: Sunday, Jan. 29, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
What: The UMass Lowell Vietnamese Student Association and Lowell’s Vietnamese community will ring in the New Year at a celebration that is free and open to the public. The event will feature food, music and live performances and marks the start of the Year of the Rooster. The VSA is one of more than 200 student-run organizations at UMass Lowell. MLKMLK Dinner Honors University, Community Leaders
When: Tuesday, Jan. 31, 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.
What: Members of the university community and the public who exemplify the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to social justice will be recognized with Distinguished Service Awards at UMass Lowell’s annual MLK Celebration Dinner. The theme for the program is “the fierce urgency of now,” a term coined by King at the 1963 March on Washington, which drew more than 200,000 people and helped galvanize public opinion in favor of pushing Congress to protect civil and economic rights. Artwork and essays by Lowell public schoolchildren that illustrate this theme will also be honored during the free event, which is organized by the university’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. Members of the public interested in attending the program should RSVP to multicultural_affairs@uml.edu by Friday, Jan. 27.

KCSExpert to Present on Innovative Treatments for Diseases
When: Wednesday, Feb. 1, 3 p.m.
What: The UMass Lowell Kennedy College of Sciences’ new Distinguished Lecture Series will begin with the program “Real World Medicine and Real World Patients: Critical Understanding for Translational and Precision Medicine.” Featuring Michael Liebman, managing director of IPQ Analytics LLC and Strategic Medicine Inc., the presentation will explore the risk factors and progression of diseases as a way to improve diagnoses, treatment and patient care. The event is free and open to the campus and community.
