MEDIA ADVISORY
WHEN: Wednesday, Dec. 13. Film screening begins at 5:45 p.m. Discussion with the filmmakers follows at 7 p.m.
WHAT: Producers Nick Buzzell and Ted Leonsis will share the behind-the-scenes story of the making of the documentary “We the People: The Market Basket Effect,” which chronicles how a six-week boycott of the grocery chain by thousands of employees and millions of customers in 2014 successfully led to the reinstatement of fired CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.
The free community event is the first program to be presented by UMass Lowell’s new Richard and Nancy Donahue Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, which is part of the Manning School of Business. The film features interviews with UMass Lowell’s Scott Latham, an expert on retail and business strategy.
The program will include a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers after a screening of the movie. Leonsis is a Lowell High School graduate who went on to be a top executive with AOL before founding his own company, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns three professional sports teams – the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics – along with the 20,000-seat Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Buzzell, who previously served as head of production for NBCUniversal’s digital studios, is the chief executive officer of NBTV Studios.
