WHAT: Five UMass Lowell students will have a front-row seat to history when they attend the inauguration of Donald Trump, who will be sworn in as the nation’s 45th president on Friday, Jan. 20 at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The students are attending the swearing-in ceremony thanks to UMass Lowell’s partnership with The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, where they have spent two weeks learning about policy issues in the nation’s capital, culminating with the inauguration. The students will be available for media interviews before and after the event.

The students are from Medford, Peabody and Woburn, along with Miami, Fla. and Piscataway, N.J. They include:

  • A former intern for the Hillary Clinton campaign who previously completed internships with NBC News at the Democratic National Convention and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren;
  • A member of UMass Lowell’s award-winning Mock Trial Team who hopes to become a civil-rights lawyer;
  • A former intern with the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance who campaigned for Republican state Senate candidate Susan LaPlante of Lawrence this summer;
  • An aspiring broadcast journalist who interned at the Democratic National Convention in July with Agence France-Presse, the third-largest news agency in the world;
  • An unenrolled voter who is eager to learn more about Trump’s administration and policy positions.

Their two-week program also includes a simulation exercise on the federal budget and classroom and networking sessions with elected leaders, policy experts and media professionals. Three of the students are political science majors, one is an English major and the other is double-majoring in both subjects.

To interview any of the students, contact UMass Lowell media relations.
