What: Nine UMass Lowell students studying for their bachelor of fine arts degrees will display their senior thesis projects during this exhibition, which is free and open to the campus and public. Pieces were created through a variety of media including animation, painting, drawing, graphic art, installation and website design. The students, who will be available to discuss their works during the artists’ reception, are from Andover, Billerica, Lowell, Methuen, Rowley and Wakefield, along with Salem, N.H., and Suffield, Conn.

BookAward-Winning Author to Read Latest Tales of Horror
When: Thursday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m.
What: Tales about obsession, madness and murder will set imaginations spinning when author David Daniel, an award-winning mystery writer, reads from his work in “Insanity Tales II: The Sense of Fear,” during a free event that is open to the public. Daniel, a UMass Lowell faculty member who teaches creative writing in the university’s Division of Online and Continuing Education, is the author of nine novels, more than 80 short stories and a co-author of the textbook, “Take Charge of Your Writing.” Other authors who will read their works from the anthology include Rob Smales, Vlad V. and Ursula Wong. After the readings, the authors will sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase.

AdmissionsOpen House Welcomes Prospective Graduate Students
When: Wednesday, Jan. 13, 3 to 7 p.m.
What: Working professionals and others interested in pursuing their education at UMass Lowell can learn about graduate, continuing-education and online offerings during an open house designed to meet their needs. Prospective students can find out more about the university’s 42 master’s, 36 doctoral and more than 70 graduate certificate programs, which are offered on campus, online or in a blended format that combines both options. Faculty program coordinators, graduate admissions, registrar’s office and financial aid staff will be available to answer questions. UMass Lowell programs are nationally accredited. On-site registration will be available.

HockeyRiver Hawks Hockey Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer
When: Saturday, Jan. 16, 7 p.m.
What: UMass Lowell’s men’s hockey team and River Hawks fans will offer their support to breast cancer survivors and those living with the disease during the annual “Pink at the Rink” night, part of the Hockey East Association’s Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative. When the River Hawks face off against the Minutemen of UMass Amherst, the ice will be dyed pink in a show of solidarity. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from the game’s promotions will benefit Lowell General Hospital’s TeamWalk for CancerCare, which helps pay for the day-to-day needs of cancer patients, including medications, wigs and transportation services. Now in its 10th season, the Skating Strides program has raised nearly $300,000 toward the fight against breast cancer.
