WHAT: Members of the business and higher-education communities will get a first look at the new UMass Lowell Innovation Hub and the expansion of the university’s successful Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) business incubator.

Located in the heart of Lowell’s revitalized Hamilton Canal District in the new 110 Canal building, the Innovation Hub and M2D2 incubator offer co-working and research space as well as expert assistance for entrepreneurs and startups in the medical device and tech sectors. The two operations occupy a total of 22,000 square feet over two floors of the former Freudenberg Nonwovens mill. The building is one of several former mills that are being converted for commercial and residential use at the 15-acre site.

The new Innovation Hub and M2D2 expansion represent a significant commitment by UMass Lowell to the renewal of the Hamilton Canal District. They are the first commercial components of the redevelopment and the location’s proximity to the UMass Lowell campus will encourage faculty and student participation and facilitate collaboration with the existing M2D2 space at the Wannalancit Business Center. M2D2 is a joint effort of UMass’ Lowell and Worcester campuses and has worked with 100 startup companies that have raised more than $40 million in external funding.

The event is scheduled to include remarks by UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan and Executive Vice Chancellor Jacqueline Moloney. Participants in the annual Deshpande Symposium for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Higher Education being held at UMass Lowell this week will be among the attendees at the opening event.

Tours of the Innovation Hub and M2D2 will be offered. Some attendees will be shuttled to the event via a National Park Service boat along the Pawtucket Canal from the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center to 110 Canal St. courtesy of Enterprise Bank.

Note: This event is not open to the public, but members of the media are invited to attend. Entrepreneurs based in the Innovation Hub and M2D2 incubator will be available for interviews along with UMass Lowell representatives.

WHERE: 110 Canal St., Lowell. Contact UMass Lowell media relations for directions and parking information.
