Author to Speak on Improving Life for Children with Disabilities
When: Thursday, Nov. 13, 3:30 p.m.
What: Gina Gallagher, co-author of “Shut Up about Your Perfect Kid!” will talk about the challenges and rewards of raising children with disabilities in a world preoccupied with perfection. Bringing a dose of humor to their work, Gallagher and her sister, Patricia Terrasi, wrote the book together based on their experiences raising children with autism-spectrum and bi-polar disorders. The sisters are proponents of what they call the “Movement of Imperfection,” which encourages people to embrace diversity. The talk is free and open to the UMass Lowell community and the public.

Violin and Lyra Concert Celebrates Greek Culture
When: Sunday, Nov. 16, 3 p.m.
What: “The Violin and Lyras of Greece” will celebrate traditional folk music from all regions of the country in a free concert for the public and UMass Lowell community. Performers will include Beth Bahia Cohen on the violin and lyra, Sandy Theodorou on laouto, accordion and vocals, and Fabio Pirozzolo on percussion. The event is presented by UMass Lowell and the Hellenic Culture and Heritage Society, which advances Greek-American life in Lowell.

UMass Lowell Wind Ensemble to Present Free Concert
When: Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7:30 p.m.
What: The University Wind Ensemble will perform a variety of contemporary compositions in a free concert for the UMass Lowell campus and the public. This elite group of UMass Lowell students – who play woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments – will be conducted by Daniel Lutz, director of university bands and a faculty member in the Department of Music.

Event Showcases Music by Portuguese Composers
When: Wednesday, Nov. 19, 8 p.m.
What: Musical duo Doppio Ensemble will perform the works of Portuguese composers in a free, public concert. The pair – violinist Evandra De Brito Gonçalves and pianist Ana Queiros – have each won awards for their virtuosity on their instruments and have performed together all over the world. Concert selections will include works by Fernando Lopes-Graça, Anne Victorino D’Almeida and Sergio Azevedo, among others. The performance is presented by UMass Lowell’s Saab-Pedroso Center for Portuguese Culture and Research and the International Student and Scholars Office.
