What: Albie Sachs – a former colleague of the late South African president Nelson Mandela and UMass Lowell’s 2014 Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies – will help break ground on a city of Lowell memorial honoring Mandela’s work and legacy.

An influential member of the African National Congress, judge and author who helped bring democracy to South Africa, Sachs is expected to be joined by UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan, city leaders and members of the local African American Alliance for the event, which is free and open to the public.

The groundbreaking for the Mandela memorial is being held during Sachs’ residency at UMass Lowell as the university’s Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies. During his stay throughout April, he is taking part in programs that engage the university community and the public in advancing human rights, democracy and peace.

The UMass Lowell Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies is selected annually in recognition of the honoree’s distinguished humanitarian achievements and ability to effectively promote peace and conflict resolution at the local, regional, national or international level. Honorees are chosen by the UMass Lowell Peace and Conflict Studies Institute, Greeley Scholar Advisory Committee and leadership of the Peace and Conflict Studies master’s degree program.

Where: Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, western lawn, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell. Contact UMass Lowell media relations for directions and parking information.
