LOWELL, Mass. – Combining musical tradition with impeccable virtuosity, the internationally acclaimed duo Doppio Ensemble will perform a free concert at UMass Lowell for the public and university community.
The evening of contemporary chamber music will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19 beginning at 8 p.m. at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell. The event is presented by UMass Lowell’s Saab-Pedroso Center for Portuguese Culture and Research and the university’s International Student and Scholars Office.
The performers behind Doppio Ensemble – violinist Evandra de Brito Gonçalves and pianist Ana Queirós – have each won awards for their musicianship and came together in 2002 to promote the works of Portuguese musicians. Gonçalves has studied under renowned violinist and conductor Isaac Stern and is a member of the Orquestra Nacional do Porto; Queiros is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with master pianist Solomon Mikowsky. Working together as Doppio Ensemble, the women have shared their passion for music with audiences around the world.
The duo’s repertoire spans the Baroque period to the 21st-century and encompasses jazz, bossa nova and world-beat music. Concert selections will include works by Portuguese composers Fernando Lopes-Graça, Anne Victorino D’Almeida and Sergio Azevedo, among others.
Established in 2013, the Saab-Pedroso Center for Portuguese Culture and Research at UMass Lowell promotes the study of the language, literature and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world, which is comprised of 230 million people in eight countries on four continents. UMass Lowell’s International Student and Scholars Office helps the university’s international students make a successful and rewarding transition to life on campus and in the United States.
