What: What are the political and practical ramifications of the federal government shutdown? What is the economic ripple effect? As the shutdown approaches its eighth day, some federal employees are returning to work while others remain furloughed. UMass Lowell experts on government, politics and the economy will explore the closure’s many effects during the roundtable discussion “The Government Shutdown: Why Are They Doing This and What Does it Mean?”

Leading the discussion will be:

  • Joshua Dyck, associate professor of political science and co-director of UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion. Dyck is an expert in American politics, political parties, interest groups and public policy.
  • Morgan Marietta, assistant professor of political science, an expert in American politics and political psychology. He has authored books on contemporary American political ideology, political persuasion and the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court.
  • David Kingsley, assistant professor of economics, whose research includes studying the economic role of government.

The event is free and open to the public.
