What: The UMass Lowell ice hockey team and head coach Norm Bazin will talk about the River Hawks’ historic advance to the NCAA Tournament’s Frozen Four and take questions from the press.
For the first time in the university’s history, the team will compete for the NCAA Division I ice hockey championship. The River Hawks are fresh off their first-ever Hockey East regular season and tournament championships. Two years ago, the team went 5-25-4. Last year, Bazin led the turnaround for the River Hawks, who reached the quarterfinals of the Hockey East Tournament and the NCAA regionals.
The rise of the hockey team – fueled by the university’s acquisition of its ice-hockey venue, the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, and its determination to turn it into the best in the region – is just one of example of how the entire university is soaring higher, reaching unprecedented numbers in enrollment, student success, funding for research and fundraising.
At the Frozen Four, the River Hawks are set to play in the semifinals on Thursday, April 11 at 4:30 p.m. against Yale University at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. With a win, UMass Lowell advances to the NCAA Championship Saturday, April 13 against the winner of the other semifinal game, either St. Could State University or Quinnipiac University. Both games will be televised on ESPN2.
Where: Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell lobby, 300 Martin Luther King Way, Lowell, Mass.
