Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Consistent with commonwealth law, holidays that fall on a Saturday are observed on that Saturday. Accordingly, the campus will be open for business on both Friday, July 3, and Monday, July 6.

All benefits-eligible university staff, including non-unit employees and employees covered by collective bargaining agreements (SEIU Professional Unit, MTA Grants and Contracts Unit, University Police Teamsters Unit, MTA Maintenance and Trades Unit, and MTA Clerical Unit), are eligible for paid holiday time for July 4. Because the holiday falls on a Saturday this year, employees should coordinate with their supervisors regarding their work schedules and plans to use this holiday time.

While the campus will remain open on Friday, July 3, departments should allow as many employees as possible to take that day off, consistent with operational needs. Employees who work on Friday should record their time as Holiday Comp Time Earned and then use that accrued time on the day they take off in lieu of the holiday. Whenever possible, Monday, July 6, should be used as the alternative day off. If that is not possible, employees should work with their supervisors to schedule another day off in lieu of the holiday within 60 days.
