Welcome New Dean Chilton
We are excited to welcome our new Dean Galadriel Chilton. She joins us from the Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation where she was the Director for Collection Initiatives. There will be multiple chances for our community to meet Dean Chilton through the semester. Watch our social media and webpage for more information.
Library Refresh
You’re going to see a lot of changes from the University Library this semester. Lydon Library’s new book nook debuted at the end of the spring semester, but they also replaced the skylight on the first floor with a new roof. The second floor Katen Commons furniture was cleaned and replaced as needed.
O’Leary Library had a huge move through the summer. Library services have moved to the third and fourth floor. You can easily get help from the library staff, check out books without having to go too far, and study in our new spaces. We have new study rooms and group study spots for you to enjoy!
The library webpage has also been refreshed. It’s now easier to find the resources you need and connect with the library team for help.
Library Resources
If you are researching the history of Lowell or the university, or want to incorporate related content into your classes, consider accessing our Special Collections Library. Meet with our archivists by making an appointment to visit the Center for Lowell History.
When you or your students need help with research, Ask A Librarian is available. Our FAQs cover hundreds of topics and you can email ask@uml.libanswers.com for personalized help. We have drop-in and Zoom help available. You can also book personal appointments with the Research & Learning Librarians. We’re happy to meet with you over Zoom or in person to help with your literature and systematic reviews.
Resource Requests
Is there content that your students need for their assignments? Is there a movie you’d like them to watch or a book to read? We’re happy to work with you to find accessible content. Please submit your requests on the Purchase Request form.
Support for Open Access Publishing
We have open access publishing agreements with Wiley and Institute of Physics (IOP), the American Chemical Society, the Company of Biologists, American Society for Microbiology, and Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). Those publishing in journals from these publishers have the option to have their articles published open access. The library's contract with the publisher waives the open access article processing charges (APCs). If you have questions about this agreement or would like us to talk to a publisher you regularly work with, please email Alice_Pearman@uml.edu, Assistant Director for Library Collections.
Faculty Publications
This summer we updated our faculty publications collections. Each library features the books written by our faculty. Visit the fourth floor of O’Leary Library or the third floor in Lydon Library. If you have published a book that isn’t included in either collection, let us know on our Purchase Request form.
Find Us Online
Remember, you can visit the main library webpage for direct access to everything we offer. We’re excited to collaborate with you this year!
