The program begins with English composer Gustav Holst’s Moorside March, then settles firmly in America. Reminiscent Rhapsody, a Gershwin-styled piece, incorporates ragtime, jazz, blues, and pop of the 1930’s, found in works like Concerto in F, Rhapsody in Blue; many considered great masterpieces today. Black Granite, so named for the Vietnam memorial, pays homage to those who served. Ascension is the third movement of Robert W. Smith’s The Divine Comedy, based on Dante’s work of the same title an audio rendering of the thematic work. The students’ favorite Cry of The Last Unicorn brings to bear Disney-esque storytelling of a unicorn’s final moments; a musical journey that will hold you on the edge of your seat, hurtling through the forest alongside the Last Unicorn.
This concert is free and open to the public.
