This year for the sixth annual UMass Lowell Days of Giving, I am pleased to share that Chancellor Julie Chen and her partner, Susu Wong, have generously offered $100,000 in challenge funds to inspire our community to empower student success. If we reach our donor goal of 2,400 donors, UMass Lowell will receive $60,000 toward key priorities. The remaining $40,000 will be awarded to the top 10 areas of campus that secure the most donors, with each being awarded $4,000.
Days of Giving will run from noon on April 11 until noon on April 13 and it coincides with the inauguration of Chancellor Chen, who after a long tenure at UMass Lowell, is in her first academic year as chancellor.
The fundraising event brings out the heart of our community, drawing support from faculty, staff, alumni, friends, students and university partners. Donors will be encouraged to support five impact areas: athletics, career-connected experiences, food and housing security, scholarships and student mental health and wellness. In addition, donors may designate their gift to help other campus organizations, student support areas or university programs.
In 2022, nearly 700 students made gifts, and the entire UML community donated a record $625,000. That included $20,000 for the UML Strive Food Pantry (to buy 4,000 meals), more than $60,000 for student scholarships and $73,000 for River Hawk student athletes.
Events that feature T-shirts, give-a-ways and ice cream will be held around campus where the university community can learn more about donating. The process is made easy through scanning a QR code, accepting credit card or wallet payments like Apple Pay, Venmo or PayPal. Gifts will also be accepted via check or cash.
