Welcomes Nelson Mandela's Guard and Friend
The Office of the Provost hosted an event featuring Christo Brand, author of “Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend” on Thursday, Dec. 4, at University Crossing. Brand was Nelson Mandela’s prison guard on South Africa’s Robben Island for 12 years, during which the two developed a strong bond. PCS Event featuring Honey Thaljieh
Women Sports & The Middle East: A presentation on the roles of gender & sports in the Middle East by Honey Thaljieh, hosted by the Peace and Conflict studies program, on Fri., Nov. 21, 2014. Honey Thaljieh is an advocate for women, sports and equality in the Middle East, Corporate Communications Manager at FIFA and former captain and co-founder of the Palestinian Women’s National Football Team.
Making a Global Difference: PCS Students Share their International Experiences
Peace and Conflict Studies students make a difference on the local, national and international levels. At an event in February, PCS Master's students who were abroad the previous semester shared their international experiences. Donna Hackley talked about her work in Rwanda building healthcare infrastructure. Vanessa Colomba, who also traveled to Rwanda, described how she is setting up a non-profit organization to provide mentorship to at-risk youth. Maryann Ford did her internship in the United States Embassy in Belfast which gave her first-hand access to key diplomatic decisions. Ianna Hondros-McCarthy went to India to work with the Active Non-Violence Education Center which supports Tibetan movements for peace.
