Video Production and Editing

Digital media student focuses a video camera in a UMass Lowell studio

Course runs from May 18 to June 8

The Digital Media Summer Seminar is an intensive, credit-bearing workshop for high school and undergraduate students (DGMD.2520) centered on cinematic storytelling and camera artistry. Fast-paced and hands-on, the program builds technical foundations while fostering creative confidence, decisive problem-solving, and the development of a personal voice.

Students train with professional Blackmagic cameras, lenses, lighting and sound equipment, completing projects in DaVinci Resolve Studio. Through focused exercises and collaborative production, participants strengthen skills in composition, exposure, camera movement, lighting and editorial craft.

Working in small teams, students create a short narrative or documentary film that serves as a polished portfolio piece. The workshop concludes with a formal presentation and screening of completed projects.

The seminar may serve as a transition into continued study within the Digital Media program, preparation for comparable film and media programs, or as a stand-alone, intensive skills-building experience for students seeking focused training in media production.

Three-Week Camera-Focused Structure

  • Week 1: Foundations: Cinematic language, Blackmagic camera systems operation, lensing, composition, lighting fundamentals, and DaVinci Studio workflow reinforced through daily hands-on exercises.
  • Week 2: Production: Advanced camera movement, lighting for mood, blocking and performance, sound basics, team pre-production, and principal photography.
  • Week 3: Post and Refinement: Editing for story, introductory color grading, sound design, critique and revision, and final project presentation.
