The Art and Design Department launched its inaugural Summer Pre-College Portfolio Program in July 2026. This two-week intensive program introduced rising high school juniors and seniors from the Greater Lowell region to the creative process within a college-level studio environment.
Students received instruction in drawing, printmaking, painting, and assemblage while working closely with two faculty instructors and two studio assistants. The studio assistants, both rising seniors in UML’s Art & Design program, modeled strong studio practices while providing valuable peer-level guidance, support, and mentorship. The program also offered students the opportunity to work directly with two local contemporary artists, Lauvaughan Jenkins and Loretta Park, whose participation provided an additional perspective on contemporary art practices and professional creative work.
The program culminated in a student exhibition in the University Gallery, giving students the opportunity to present their completed work to family members, faculty, and the broader local community. The exhibition celebrated their accomplishments and highlighted the range of creative exploration that took place throughout the program.
We look forward to welcoming a new cohort for the second year of the Summer Pre-College Portfolio Program and to continuing to foster meaningful educational connections and creative partnerships between the University and the region’s creative community.
