Honors College Scholars

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts awards baccalaureate students in the Honors College the Commonwealth Honors distinction on their degrees. Students in the college who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25, taken 18-24 credits at the honors level, completed an honors project under the guidance of a faculty committee and presented that project in a public venue are eligible for this distinction.

U.S. Air Force ROTC

The UMass Lowell Air Force ROTC detachment educates and trains cadets with the professional, warrior and moral acumen to succeed as officers for our nation. Throughout the four-year program, cadets complete academic courses in the profession of arms, leadership and national security policy. Combined with weekly leadership laboratories, a vigorous physical fitness regimen, and summer experiences, these cadets ultimately receive presidential-level commissions as Second Lieutenants. 
Currently under the command of Lt. Col. Darren Lee, the university’s Air Force ROTC detachment will commission the following members of the Class of 2025 in a subsequent ceremony:

U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps

The U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program is a diverse group of men and women with more than 20,000 cadets currently enrolled nationwide. Army ROTC produces approximately 70% of the second lieutenants who join the active Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. 

More than 40% of current active-duty Army general officers were commissioned through Army ROTC. The UMass Lowell Army ROTC graduates will have completed both the basic and advanced courses in military skills and fundamentals of leadership, advanced military tactics and decision-making, as well as planning and team organization. 

The cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army and will enter either active duty, the National Guard or the Army Reserve in diverse careers such as aviation, air defense artillery, engineer, signal, military police, finance, chaplain, medical services, chemical, military intelligence, ordinance and acquisition. The Bay State Battalion Army ROTC program, chaired by CPT Patrick Crews, will commission one second lieutenant from the Class of 2025.

Baccalaureate Degree Honors

The university awards baccalaureate degrees with three levels of distinction to graduating students who have exhibited exceptional scholastic records. To be eligible for university honors, each student must achieve a minimum grade-point average of at least 3.25 for all courses completed at the university and must have earned a minimum of 60 credits at the school.
Appropriate honors will be noted on diplomas following the determinations of final baccalaureate averages and are signified during the ceremony by the presence of Latin Honor Cords. This designation will also appear on individual Commencement slides.

Honors cords: 

  • Cum laude: GPA of 3.25 or higher (1 cord)
  • Magna cum laude: GPA of 3.5 or higher (2 cords) 
  • Summa cum laude: GPA of 3.85 or higher (3 cords)
