Description
For thousands of years, the Indian Ocean has connected societies spanning east Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and South Asia. Driven by commercial gain, imperial expansion, and religious fervor, innumerable people have crisscrossed the ocean in dhows, junks, brigs, and steamships seeking new opportunities in foreign lands. This course offers students a broad overview of the region's modern history, introducing them to many of the cultures and civilizations that shaped its trajectory. Throughout the semester, we will cover a wide variety of topics including indigenous societies, commercial networks, European colonization, independence movements, economic development, and international relations.
