The UMass Lowell Baseball Research Center (BRC) is internationally recognized as a Center of Excellence for the science and engineering of baseball, advancing both experimental and analytical methods in sports research. Founded in 1999, the BRC has educated generations of students in Sports Engineering while collaborating with professional sports leagues, governing associations, and sporting goods manufacturers to advance the scientific understanding and performance of sports equipment.

Today, the Baseball Research Center serves as a cornerstone of the Center for Sports Engineering and Performance and the Sports Collaborative for Open Research and Education (SCORE), expanding interdisciplinary opportunities in engineering, biomechanics, human performance, data analytics, and sports science across the UMass Lowell campus. The Center also supports experiential learning and workforce development through the Sports Engineering Minor, helping prepare students for careers in the growing field of sports technology and innovation.

As one of the few university programs in the world dedicated to Sports Engineering, the Center has hosted major international events including the 2012 conference of the International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA), as well as Concussion Prevention and Diagnosis Workshops in 2015 and 2017. Through research, education, and industry collaboration, the BRC and its affiliated initiatives continue to shape the future of sports technology, athlete performance, and equipment innovation.

Graduate Students interested in pursuing research if the field of Sports Engineering should contact the Center to discuss opportunities.

Sporting Goods Companies and Leagues are encouraged to contact the Center with research challenges and projects to discuss the potential for developing a research project, program or collaboration.
