4 to 8:30 p.m.

WHAT: UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff will explore Lowell’s restaurants, shops and attractions during a “welcome back” event that will showcase all the city has to offer and fuel its growth as a college town.

Walking tours of the city from 4 to 6 p.m. will feature landmarks important to Lowell’s history and identity, and will be led by representatives of Lowell National Historical Park and the Cultural Organization of Lowell (COOL).

A social at Lowell’s Mill No. 5 will start at 6 p.m. The renovated mill is home to eclectic, locally owned businesses that include a coffee house, record store, photography studio, the Luna Theater and even a weekly farmer’s market. UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney and City Manager Kevin Murphy are scheduled to offer remarks.

A variety of downtown businesses will provide specials and discounts to members of the UMass Lowell community throughout the evening.

Presented in partnership with the city of Lowell, the event is part of Moloney’s First 90 Initiative (#First90), focusing the first 90 days of the new chancellor’s administration on advancing programs important to the second phase of the university’s strategic plan, “UMass Lowell 2020.”

The event complements the new marketing campaign, “#Lowell: There’s a Lot to Like,” launched by UMass Lowell, the city and the Lowell Plan to promote Lowell as a vibrant place to live, work, study and play. The event also dovetails with the university’s Live in Lowell program that encourages faculty and staff to live in the city, which is already home to hundreds of UMass Lowell’s nearly 2,000 employees.

WHERE: Tours start and end at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell. Mill No. 5 is located at 250 Jackson St., Lowell.
