Research Interests

Shannon Kelleher’s research interests center around understanding the role and regulation of zinc transport in highly specialized tissues and characterizing the roles of maternal genotype and miRNAs as molecular drivers of mammary gland function, milk production and composition.

Using various biochemical and molecular biology techniques in cultured cell and transgenic mouse models, and clinical studies in humans, we evaluate the functional relevance of gene variants and biomolecules responsible for 1) intestinal inflammation and response to enteric infection; and 2) insufficient milk production and suboptimal milk composition in humans, which is surprising common and the major reason women stop breastfeeding before they intend to.

In addition, we strive to understand risk factors and develop novel milk-based biomarkers for insufficient lactation in order to develop novel therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat common breastfeeding problems.
