Wael Kamal, Ph.D. is the founding Director of the Digital Media Program at UMass Lowell and is jointly an Associate Teaching Professor in the Art & Design Department. Kamal is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal on Telecom and Digital Media (JTDM), Singapore.

Kamal received his Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Georgia State University in 2006, M.A. in Cinematography from Academy of Arts, Egypt in 1999, B.A. in Cinematography from Academy of Arts, Egypt in 1993. Beside his solid cinematography background and hands-on-experience in the field of commercial video work and lighting working on TV sets and broadcasting stations (1994-2012), he has been the recipient of many photography awards and certificates of appreciation from both the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts Sector 1989-2000. Kamal exhibited his photography work internationally in Japan, Malta, Italy, Spain, UAE, Poland, and Egypt .
