Caren Smith, D.V.M., M.S. is a scientist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (JM-USDA-HNRCA) at Tufts University. During training at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts, she conducted a clinical trial studying nutritional modulation of genetically-based heart disease in pet dogs. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Nutrition at the JM-USDA-HNRCA at Tufts in 2010, where she is now a member of the Nutrition and Genomics Laboratory. Beginning in 2009, she received NIH loan repayment awards from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, facilitating her focus on genetics and Health Disparities for cardio-metabolic disease. She is interested primarily in gene-environment interactions for cardio-metabolic outcomes, (obesity, diabetes, inflammation), which she has investigated since 2007 in the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study and in many other populations of diverse racial and ethnic groups.
