June 20-21, 2013

The Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Center for Healthcare (MATCH) is a well-established research collaboration between four leading UK universities (Birmingham, Brunel, Nottingham and Ulster) which is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and partner subscriptions.

MATCH aims to transform the medical device sector by making available methods and tools that cut the time and cost from concept to continuous improvement in the market. MATCH seeks to support device users, the medical device industry, regulators, reimbursement agencies and healthcare providers such as the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.

As part of a widening international outreach program, MATCH is partnering with the Massachusetts Medical Device Develop.m.ent Center (M2D2) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell to provide two workshops in key areas where the MATCH research has developed tools and methods to support business decisions in the medical device sector.

Participants in the MATCH-M2D2 International workshops will have the opportunity to see how the MATCH Open Business Tool can allow medical device companies to gain a better understanding of their approach to innovation and how an early stage health economic evaluation methodology can assist with critical aspects of business decision making.

Where: University of Massachusetts Club
255 Franklin Street, 33rd Floor, Boston, MA  02110
MATCH has developed a relatively simple tool that can be used to assess the commercial potential of medical devices and which can be applied at the very early stages of develop.m.ent to assist with deciding whether or not to pursue the idea. With the aid of some theoretical develop.m.ent, it can also be extended for application at the stage when the product is about to be placed on the market and can also be used when making develop.m.ent decisions, in that the approach accounts for uncertainty that can help to decide when to invest further in a product. Although not all forms of risk are covered by this theory, it does link the uncertainty a business carries forward to the strength of the statistics from clinical and other trials that the product may have undergone.
This MATCH-M2D2 International Workshop offers:
  • Training with the Headroom Method Tool for economically evaluating medical device and related products;
  • An extension of the model that applies clinical trials data – with the associated spread of uncertainty – to introduce the concept of the maximum reimbursable prices;
  • Training in the use of the maximum reimbursable price in price-setting decisions;
  • A further extension to the model that applies the concept of maximum reimbursable price and clinical trials uncertainty to investment decisions and the associated analysis of that risk that is then carried into new product develop.m.ent
  • An introduction to clinical trials evidence including basic methods to analysis
 Who Should Attend?
  • Anyone interested in health technology assessment and the application of early stage health economic analysis;
  • R&D Managers wishing to integrate health economic considerations into New Product Development systems;
  • Marketing Managers seeking to differentiate products based on cost-effectiveness;
  • Sales Managers seeking to articulate a Value Proposition for their Innovative Products;
  • Investors seeking informed product develop.m.ent decisions based on health technology assessment.
Attendees will receive:
  • Case Study/Demonstration – highlighting practical applications;
  • A complimentary copy of the Headroom Method Tool and training guide;
  • An opportunity for ‘hands-on’ use of the Headroom Method Tool;
  • A complimentary copy of the MATCH Guide ‘Evaluating Health Devices’
