• Research - Improve the health of individuals and communities through applied and novel data science approaches.
  • Education - Train next generations of data scientists to advance clinical, biomedical, and public health research and their applications to large databases.
  • Service - Work with industry, community, and governmental partners to improve community health, engagement, and wellness.

These steps will be accomplished through the development of new collaborations among University of Massachusetts campuses, health care providers and industry.

CHORDS will establish itself as an international center for data science in biomedical and health innovation, research, and education.

  1. Revolutionize information science including natural language processing, machine learning, information retrieval, and data mining.
  2. Foster collaboration across a diverse set of disciplines including computer, biological, statistical, clinical and linguistic sciences.
  3. Produce and disseminate analytical tools to solve difficult and intractable problems involving big data.
  4. Educate, mentor and support medical students, doctoral, postdoctoral and fellow participants to become professionals in the field of biomedical and healthcare informatics through a M.S. or Ph.D. program via collaboration among the CHORDS contributing institutions: UMass Medical School, UMass Amherst’s College of Information and Computer Sciences and the Department of Veterans Affairs (e.g., Bedford Veterans Administration Medical Center).
