Research Group Member Presents at UMass Lowell Student Research Symposium
Our research group member, Yaduwanshi Uday, participated in the Student Research Symposium held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
He presented his work on the use of satellite-based remote sensing for geotechnical hazard assessment, highlighting how advanced Earth observation tools can support improved understanding and monitoring of potential ground instability and related risks.
Biswas Geosystems Group Member Wins at GeoCongress 2026
We are proud to share that Fatemeh Karbalaee, a member of the Biswas Geosystems Group and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) student at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML), won 3rd place in the National GeoPoster Competition at GeoCongress 2026 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Her presentation, “The Influence of Wave Attack and Sandy Till Geomechanics on Coastal Bluff Erosion,” focused on coastal bluff erosion and ongoing research related to erosion prediction in geotechnical and coastal systems.
This work is supported through the UML Researchers and Scholars Investment (RSI) award. We congratulate Hamta on this well-deserved recognition and achievement.
Biswas Geosystems Group Activities at GeoCongress 2026
The Biswas Geosystems Group was actively engaged in GeoCongress 2026 in Salt Lake City, Utah, contributing to technical discussions and showcasing ongoing research and professional activities in geotechnical engineering.
As part of the conference, Assistant Professor Nripoyoti Biswas delivered a presentation titled “Development of Deep Learning Based Model for Estimating Erosion Rates in Cohesive Soils,” highlighting recent advances in data-driven approaches for erosion modeling and geotechnical applications.
The group’s activities at GeoCongress 2026 also included participation in the Young Member Technical Session, where João A. R. Machado presented “Geotechnical Testing for Upstream Tailing Dam Removal: Lessons from Brazil.” His presentation shared insights from advanced geotechnical testing and mine tailings engineering, contributing to broader discussions on innovative solutions and case-study-based practice in the field.
Overall, GeoCongress 2026 provided an excellent opportunity for the group to share research, engage with the geotechnical community, and strengthen academic and professional connections across institutions and industry.
Proud Moment for Our Research Group at the Tufts Geotechnical Symposium
Last week marked a proud and exciting milestone for our research group. Fatemeh Karbalaee presented her poster titled “Physics-driven Modeling of Erosion for Coastal Bluffs” at the 4th Annual Symposium in Geotechnical Engineering at Tufts University.
The presentation was met with strong engagement from attendees, drawing significant interest and generating many thoughtful and technically insightful discussions. The poster attracted considerable footfall throughout the session, reflecting the relevance and appeal of the research topic. Fatemeh addressed questions with clarity, confidence, and professionalism, contributing to productive exchanges on coastal erosion processes and physics-based modeling approaches.
This work was supported by the University of Massachusetts Lowell Researchers and Scholars Investment Fund, whose funding played a key role in enabling the development and presentation of this research. We gratefully acknowledge this support, which continues to foster student-led innovation and scholarly activity.
We congratulate Fatemeh on her excellent presentation and look forward to building upon these results in future studies and outreach activities.
First Group Meeting of the Semester, Biswas Geosystems Research Group
The Biswas Geosystems Research Group recently held its first group meeting of the semester. The meeting served as a great starting point to reconnect as a team after the break and set the direction for the months ahead.
We reviewed ongoing research activities, discussed current priorities, and shared progress updates across different projects. The group also exchanged ideas on modeling approaches, experimental plans, and potential opportunities for collaboration. This discussion helped align research goals and strengthen communication within the team.
Overall, the meeting marked an encouraging start to the semester, and we look forward to continuing with regular updates, shared learning, and productive research progress throughout the term.
