UMass Lowell offers pre-law advising to all students across the university, regardless of major or program. 

The advising team consists of experienced attorneys and Law School Admission Council-trained professors familiar with law school preparation and the application process. They are happy to answer your questions by email or schedule a one-on-one meeting in person or virtually to help you on your journey to law school.

Prepare to Meet with a Pre-Law Advisor

To get the most out of meeting with your pre-law advisor, review the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) website before you meet.

Have the following available when you meet your pre-law advisor:

  • Current GPA 
  • LSAT scores (if any)  
  • Course history 
  • Employment / internship / volunteer history 
  • Honors / awards / scholarships received 
  • UML club / group / activity history  
  • Community club / group / activity history 
  • Drafts of any application materials for review 
  • A list of questions and topics to discuss 
  • An idea of your educational goals and timeline 

Preparing for Law School

This basic law school preparation timeline can help guide your planning and questions: 

Freshman & Sophomore Years

  • Choose a major that aligns with your academic interests
  • Attend Pre-Law related events and workshops
  • Join students organizations that relate to your interests
  • Start thinking about which professors you can ask for Letters of Recommendation
  • Most of all, focus on and do well in your classes!

Fall, Junior Year

  • Research law schools and programs
  • Start going to law school fairs and information sessions
  • Schedule an advising session with a Pre-Law Advisor
  • Take an LSAT diagnostic test and create an LSAT study plan
  • Start brainstorming ideas for your admission essay

Spring, Junior Year

  • Start studying for the LSAT
  • Create an LSAC account and register for the LSAT
  • Start drafting your admissions essays (personal, diversity statement, etc.)
  • Speak to professors about Letter of Recommendation

Summer, After Junior Year

  • Take the LSAT
  • Work on finalizing your application materials (resume, essays)

Fall, Senior Year

  • Retake the LSAT if needed
  • Send requests for Letters of Recommendation to your professors through CAS
  • Send transcript to CAS
  • Proofread and finalize all application materials (admission essays, resume, etc.)
  • Submit applications by November at the latest!

Spring, Senior Year

  • Consider your options and attend admitted student events
  • If waitlisted, send Letter of Continued Interest
  • Submit financial aid applications and negotiate scholarships if applicable
  • Finalize your decision and pay the necessary deposit fees
