Management Science Ph.D. Student, Advisor Recognized at DSI 2020 Conference
The DSI 2020 Annual Conference was held virtually this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Business Administration (Management Science) Ph.D. student Murtaza Nasir and his advisor, Assoc. Prof. Asil Oztekin, recently received the nationwide Best Paper Award (within the regional best paper award category) at the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) 2020 Annual Conference.Their paper, “Synthetic Average Neighborhood Sampling Algorithm (SANSA): A Neighborhood Informed Synthetic Sample Placement Approach to Improve Learning from Imbalanced Data,” was co-authored by Ali Dag of Creighton University and Serhat Simsek of Montclair State University.
Dean Sandra Richtermeyer congratulated Nasir and Oztekin for representing the Manning School of Business so well at the national conference.
“Their recognition for this important research is outstanding,” Richtermeyer said.
Prof. Harry Zhu, chair of the Operations and Information Systems department, added: “I am very proud of Murtaza and grateful of my colleague, Dr. Oztekin, who is dedicated to the continued success of the Management Science Ph.D. program in the department.”
This same study also received the finalist award and ranked third nationwide within the INFORMS 2020 Data Mining Best Paper Award category in November. INFORMS, which has over 12,500 members from around the globe, and DSI are the two leading institutions of business school faculty globally within the disciplines of operations research, management science, analytics and data science.
Last spring, the study received the Best Contribution to Theory Paper Award and the Best Overall Conference Paper Award at the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute (NEDSI) Annual Conference.
“We are so honored to receive the nationwide DSI Best Paper Award,” said Oztekin, who also thanked the distinguished panel of judges.
